With his passing in 2006, Nam June Paik left a legacy as one of the ancestors of early video art. Paik's work foreshadowed contemporary video art as both a communicative and artistic medium, depicting the real and the represented in the electronic age. James Cohan Gallery features a unique collection of sculptural works from his series of Robots, which incorporate video combined with sculptural forms. Paik began developing his Robots in 1964, out of his fascination with remote-controlled toys. Reminiscent of early sci-fi films, these works, rather clunky in their appearance, feature video monitors and surveillance cameras, allowing the audience to actually engage with the work. They are at once dated in their execution and timeless in their message, seeking to blur the lines between the actual and the imagined.
