Laurie Simmons' 2006 mini-musical film in three acts, The Music of Regret, eloquently captures the tone of this bittersweet and poignant multi-artist exhibition: Child-crafted puppets, ventriloquist dummies, and dancing objects perform on screen and emphasize the fluidity of identity construction. A metaphor for the Surveillance from the Doll House show as a whole, the medium of ventriloquism provides the opportunity to speak through a surrogate, to deflect thoughts and words, and to become someone else. From Cindy Sherman's transformation into a paper doll through Karen Yasinsky's beautiful rendered drawings of immobile women, Surveillance tackles the pain and regret of wishing to be noticed, and the frustration that comes with the failure to communicate how you truly feel.
