Based on cultural stereotypes involving maple syrup, socialized health care, and general congeniality, heavy metal wouldn't seem to be Canada's forte. Then again, you've probably never heard of Anvil. While the Ontario group's crushing 1982 epic Metal on Metal is often cited as the Velvet Underground and Nico of the genre, Anvil were largely headed down a very long road toward obsolescence — until director Sascha Gervasi decided to film their 11th-hour attempt to reclaim their title as "demigods of Canadian metal." The resulting documentary is a sweet and salty warts-and-all look at a real life Spinal Tap, whose hunger to realize their dreams of rock greatness can't be diminished by dwindling funds, hockey-arena gigs, or the infinitely tested patience of family members.
