Lou Reed's 1975 double-album, Metal Machine Music, would have to be the least poppy album ever released by a superstar. Recorded during Reed's peak commercial success, the instrumental record is pure, eviscerating noise, and is either bravely avant-garde or utterly contemptuous of core Reed fans. Reed recently formed a trio to record and tour, playing a similar instrumental sound live. Expect some of the grinding, industrial assault of the original recording, along with some less aggressive abstraction. Reed and Co. hit the Gramercy Theatre tonight with guitar, tenor sax, electronics, and some magical device called a fingerboard continuum. Color us curious.
