Allegra, the teenage heroine of Adam Syzymkowicz's play, Pretty Theft, is as pretty as her name. She's also had a great deal taken away from her. Her best friend stole her beau, her mother destroyed her self-esteem, and a seemingly kind stranger took advantage of her naïveté. Then there's the box-carrying autistic boy Allegra befriends at her summer job: his obsession with ballerinas and broken objects provide essential insight to Allegra's past, present, and future. It's these elements that come together to make Pretty Theft a sometimes sad, sometimes funny, and at times nostalgic coming-of-age story.
