Robert_longo_large

In Robert Longo's Surrendering the Absolutes, his signature large-scale charcoal drawings explore the atmospheric effects of light, and the ways in which it alters the viewer's perception of a given environment. Anchored by 25-foot drawing Untitled (Cathedral of Light), which depicts a series of cathedral windows flooding the interior space with sun, Longo departs from his typical serial imagery. The exhibition also includes views of a lone figure wandering through a forest, the exterior of an airplane — its passengers confined to a restricted space — and a satellite view of Tokyo, where the lights of the city reveal no trace of its inhabitants. All are reminiscent of the human angst and isolation typical of his '80s works.
