Though you aren't actually likely to find noted young scholar Reza Aslan's latest book in the How-To section, it does contain important advice. In No god but God, Aslan presented curious Westerners with definitive exposition on the evolution of modern Islam's two main sects; his ability to paint accessible, broad strokes, then dive back in with detail and deft analogy, renders complex issues manageable and fosters cultural understanding. His new book posits that the answer to the question How to Win a Cosmic War begins with refusing to fight in one. As he goes on to explain, this means resisting the urge to straight-jacket politics with inflamed religious rhetoric, and learning the value of patience and compassion when struggling to preserve one's identity as an engaged political being.
