Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center says…

Shakespeare leaves everything to the imagination, which is why the production of Macbeth by director John Castro and his Hipgnosis Theatre is cause for celebration. Castro's imaginative use of an empty stage, minimal costuming and props, fluorescent lighting, and actors awaiting their cues in and around the audience emphasizes the catastrophe caused by hearing first, thinking later. Julian Rozzell Jr.'s justly tortured Macbeth is introduced as weary solider, making his transformation into a despot realistic rather than supernatural. His Lady, the riveting Elizabeth Mirarchi, is similarly altered by the mere idea of becoming Queen. She too is tired of an uninfluential life at court. Bright lighting becomes the darkness of the couple's sleepless nights and the kingdom they create.
