Following a premiere last month at London's Royal Court Theatre, playwright David Hare performs Wall, his latest monologue on the Middle East. The wall in question is the 486 mile "security fence" separating Israel's eastern border from Palestine. The philosophy and reality of this building project is beyond controversial. Yet as Wall's full-text reprint in the New York Review of Books shows, Hare balances his pointed observations with those of residents living on both sides. Upon completion in 2010, the wall will be four times longer than its Berlin predecessor. As a companion piece, Hare is also performing Berlin, an autobiographical meditation on that city's separation, unification, emergence as a cultural center, and always-elusive personality.
