"Geography does not look like it does in relation to the human mind" wrote Gertrude Stein. Like her portrait by Picasso hanging at the Met, her life's work doesn't resemble anyone else's either. Because Stein's writing is most alive when spoken, Human Group has created an ensemble/performance piece out of her Geographical History of America. Written in 1936 following a successful lecture tour of America, Geographical History is an atlas of identity written in poetry and prose. Reflecting the experimental nature of the novel, Human Group is setting Stein's self-conscious text to music, dance, and photography. It shouldn't be hard discovering that the uncertain era when the book was written speaks directly to these uncertain times.
