"I wanted to write a play about double nature, one that wouldn't be symbolic or metaphorical or any of that stuff," Sam Shepard once said of True West. His brutally funny, deceptively simple play is set in '80s Southern California, and puts estranged brothers who only appear to be diametric opposites under the microscope. The Curious Frog Theatre Company's new production, directed by Issac Byrne, embraces this idea head on, staging the modern classic in the kitchen of a former East Village apartment, and casting Asian-American actors to give the material a fresh spin. For those of you who caught the now infamous 2000 production, which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly, it's time to revisit Austin and Lee's beer-fueled brawls.
