An ambitious multimedia exhibition in several parts, Négritude contemplates the inception, evolution, and contemporary international influence of a seminal 20th-century black arts and literature movement. What began in post-WWI Paris as a scholarly, philosophical reaction to the ravages of colonialism in the pan-African Diaspora, eventually spread across the globe and across generations, with reaches through the Harlem Renaissance and into contemporary art, literature, and politics. The exhibition, which includes beautiful and subversive work that both appropriates and deconstructs tropes of African culture from the drum to the cotton field, also includes a Friday-night film series dedicated to the Négritude legacy in Brazil, as well as a program of performances and discussions throughout the month.
