One of the first Broadway plays to openly discuss female homosexuality, Lillian Hellman's The Children's Hour, from 1934, holds up remarkably well in an assured new production by the Astoria Performing Arts Center. The play is both a gripping time capsule of an American era in which the mere hint of lesbianism could ruin a woman's life, and a reminder of how far gay Americans still have to go to gain acceptance and equality. Emily Dorsch is particularly affecting as Karen Wright, an all-girls' high-school teacher watching her reputation be destroyed by the rumors of a vengeful student.
