The Dardennes appear in person for a discussion with Film Comment Editor-at-Large Kent Jones on Friday, May 29 at 8:30pm.
It should come as little surprise that hyperrealist Belgian auteurs Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne began with experimental, political, hard-knock documentaries — whether about European free radio, the influx of Polish labor in Belgium, or a strike in the siblings' oft-revisited hometown, Seraing. After all, the four ethnographic and street-smart works that stake the duo's place in cinema's pantheon (and claimed Belgium's only two Palmes d'Or) employ non-actors, handheld cinematography, natural light, and zilch for a soundtrack. The FSLC's retrospective of the brothers' spare oeuvre, from the rarely seen fictional debut Falsch to Rosetta, testifies to their sacramental devotion to detailing the brutal realities of down-and-desperate characters — a forthright storytelling style that leaves you not only moved, but thoughtfully muttering mon semblable, mon frère.
