Eschewing dance beats and psychedelia for a sound more reminiscent of early-'90s alternative, Staten Island's Cymbals Eat Guitars' songs slowly materialize out of gauzy clouds of feedback nearly as often as they begin with a sudden cacophonous urgency, burying Joseph D'Agostino's ferocious melodies underneath blankets of noise. It's unabashed indie rock without any pretense of cross-genre pollination, but the quartet's sophisticated use of non-rock elements like horns and xylophones proves their CD collections go deeper than Slanted & Enchanted.
