When philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein suggested to George Balanchine that they start their own ballet company (the future New York City Ballet), the Russian choreographer agreed, suggesting "but first a school." Seventy-five years later, the School of American Ballet is arguably the best professional ballet school in the world. SAB has been the training ground for almost every NYCB dancer past and present. The all-Balanchine anniversary program includes an excerpt from Harlequinade featuring children of all ages and the silly bravura of Stars and Stripes. The centerpiece of the Workshop is Serenade; devised as a training exercise, Balanchine's first American ballet remains integral to NYCB's repertory, and Serenade's elegant and actively participating corps de ballet define the Balanchine ballerina.
