Romance novels may not be taken seriously as literature, but this exhibition at Openhouse Gallery positions their covers as legitimate artwork. The Heart of a Woman: Harlequin Cover Art 1949-2009 fills the pop-up Soho gallery with a collection of vintage and modern illustrations for historical bodice-rippers, saucy nurse/doctor workplace trysts, and romances in exotic locales. Chronicling 60 years of Harlequin novels, these covers provide a surprisingly accurate barometer of women's aspirations through the feminist and sexual revolutions: as heroines become increasingly independent, the idealized man morphs from distinguished doctor to chiseled boytoy. Be sure to visit the side room to have your headshot taken and digitally rendered onto Heart of Destiny or one of 15 other classic covers.
