Carnegie Hall hosts the Staatskapelle Berlin (one of the world's oldest orchestras) for nearly two weeks to play the complete symphonies of late-romantic Austrian composer Gustav Mahler. Not appreciated when they were first performed, Mahler's symphonies illustrate the vivid power and all-encompassing majesty of a full orchestra's potential more completely than any composer in the last century. With a shift towards minimalism in modern and contemporary composers, it's refreshing to celebrate the works of a man who relished the dynamic ranges and melodic interplay of the instruments at his disposal.
