It's no fluke that beloved songwriter Stephin Merritt chose to set Neil Gaiman's book-turned-movie Coraline to music. The darkly droll circumstances of a young girl's foray into a parallel world populated by "other parents" and performing rats is natural fodder for Merritt, who counts among his considerable credits a career with the Gothic Archies and Magnetic Fields. Adapted with David Greenspan for an older audience — a departure from the animated film version — Merritt's take features a slyly somber score, serving as a moody undertow to a production that's often as congenial as it is gothic or arch. It's also served markedly well by casting against type, including a middle-aged woman (Jayne Houdyshell) in the lead role as young Coraline, and a man (Greenspan) as a mother — of sorts.
