CMJ better watch its back. The L magazine launches the inaugural Northside Festival this week, featuring the best in NYC — and international — indie rock, all in Williamsburg and Greenpoint. (OK, so there are a few cheater showcases down in the Slope. We're cutting them slack.) It's true that you can see a lot of these bands around the city anyway, but we've got to give kudos to The L for making all this available in one weekend. Just be sure you spend some time on the schedule page to choose your bands and gigs carefully; like CMJ, there are many, many showcases every night. Arthounds at the fest get equal attention: dozens of area galleries are holding extended hours and special events, threatening your calendar further.
