The Brady Bunch meets The Bill Cosby Show in the age of Obama in Anika Larsen's autobiographical new musical Shafrika, the White Girl. Growing up white in a liberal Cambridge, Massachusetts, family with nine black, Latino, Asian, and Native American brothers and sisters sounds like fun, but as on Jon and Kate, that many siblings ain't all fun and games. The issue of racism eventually raises its ugly head, and what better way to confront it than a hip-hop routine or a '90s rock opera number? Larsen's well-meaning story alternatively borders didactic and plain silly territories, but it's hard to ignore the troupe's sheer joy in performing the high-energy numbers and not be affected by its contagious spirit.
