Just as Joanna Newsom hearts the harp, chanteur Andrew Bird vanquishes the violin. Not only does Bird strum the old-school instrument proficiently, but he also samples it, overdubs it live, and uses it as an accoutrement to glockenspiel, mandolin, and whistle. Bird delivers his multitasking melodies with trademark charisma; expect more of that tonight, along with tunes from his last folk long-player, Noble Beast. Openers Calexico rock accordions, vibraphones, and marimbas on tunes saturated with shadowy melodies and sun-warmed Western dust. The group is quick to shift shape, however, inhabiting styles ranging from minimalist acoustic folk to mariachi and Afro-Peruvian pop.
