For whatever reason, Asian cinema has become synonymous with violence, sex, and cyborgs, and the New York Asian Film Festival does nothing to dispel that myth. That said, there's always a handful of tear-jerkers and flat-out masterful strokes by the likes of Johnnie To, Takashi Miike, and Hong Sang-soo, elevating the fest. Many titles will probably — and unfortunately — only grace NYC screens during the NYAFF's 17-day run. There are also lots of giveaways at the screenings and a party-like atmosphere that can only occur when violent, sexy cyborgs and the people who love them get together.
