Yes, it's in Connecticut. Get out there — it's worth it.
As we anxiously wait for the Dave Eggers and Spike Jonze's adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, this exhibition at the Aldrich emphasizes once again the importance and power of storytelling. Amy Cutler's drawings and paintings in Pretty Tough: Contemporary Storytelling transport us to a surreal world populated with swimming pigs, chair-headed women, and dresses that double as shelters, while Stacy Steers' handmade, collage film Phantom Canyon take us on a wild, unexpected journey through one woman's memories. Fantastical, whimsical, and fairy tale-like, these works address issues of gender, identity, warfare, and violence, drawing us in with their prettiness, and challenging us with their toughness.
