Jessica Dickey's The Amish Project occupies a nebulous zone between fact and fiction, billing itself as a "fictional exploration" of the 2006 Amish school shooting in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In concept, this provokes a twinge of discomfort, but it yields an impressive piece of theatre. The Amish Project began as a hit at the 2008 NY Fringe Festival, and this one-woman tour de force — Dickey both wrote and performs the material — is now making its official premiere at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. Switching between seven different characters impacted by the shooting, including the gunman's wife and two of the young victims, Dickey weaves a powerful meditation on tragedy and forgiveness.
