Muslim Voices: Arts & Ideas — a ten-day festival gathering works of artistic expression from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the United States — takes its title seriously. Case in point, Urdu is the voice of choice in the Indian import Dastangoi: The Adventures of Amir Hamza (conveniently, there are English supertitles). The form of choice is dastangoi, a dramatic style of storytelling that traces its roots to medieval Persia, which here is used to recount the legendary exploits of the Prophet Muhammad's uncle. Don't let the esoterica throw you: These fantastical tales summon sorcerers, warriors, and tricksters, all brought to life by actors Naseeruddin Shah (Monsoon Wedding) and Danish Hussain, and stage director/scholar Mahmood Farooqui.
