Alien was that rare moment in Hollywood history when artistry and jump-out-of-your-seat thrills collided to give birth to what is still the best sci-fi action-horror film ever made. Although it was unleashed way back in '79, its special effects still trump CGI's best efforts, which all too often come off as sterile and predictable. The sets by H.R. Geiger, Ridley Scott's moody direction, and Sigourney Weaver's badass gender-redefining role only sweeten the pot for this space-opera nightmare.
