MoMA The Museum of Modern Art says…

While Amsterdam is perhaps the requisite stop on your average high-school or college graduate's "awesome summer abroad," the city once attracted a crowd charmed by more than just its lenient drug policies. From 1960-1976, Amsterdam was a haven for artists like Hanne Darboven, Gilbert & George, Sol LeWitt, Charlotte Posenenske, Allen Ruppersberg, and Lawrence Weiner. At the same time, Dutch artists were leaving the city for adventures of their own, studying in areas like London and Los Angeles. In & Out of Amsterdam examines the cross-pollination that occurred between expats and natives, arguing that it's impossible to understand the historical significance of their work without recognizing the impact travel had on Amsterdam's art scene.
