Check out our interview with the outspoken Perry over on the Flavorwire.
There are few more fascinating or talented artists in the realm of reggae and dub music than Lee "Scratch" Perry. In addition to masterminding classic albums like the Congos' Heart of the Congos and Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves, Perry played a significant role in the invention of dub, spending countless hours in his homemade Black Ark studio pushing the boundaries of reggae record production. Famously willing to incorporate nearly any element into his viscous sound — even going so far as to sample wailing babies — Perry's own music rivals that of any of his peers. He consistently veers into eccentric, experimental territory, but without sacrificing the kind of hooks appealing to those whose interest in reggae begins and ends with Bob Marley (who, by the way, Perry once produced).
