Trained in native Brazilian percussion and later with American pop hero David Byrne, bandleader Mauro Refosco updates forró — a century-old dance music of Northwestern Brazil — with an urban, indie sound that brings everyone to the dance floor. If you're too timid to samba in front of Forro's finest, peruse the MoMA's collection. (We recommend the Polish posters exhibit.)

MoMA The Museum of Modern Art says…

Forró in the Dark starts with the dance form of forró, digs deep into the sounds of northeastern Brazil, and draws on other musical currents from the world over. Whether singing about Rastafarianism, Robin Hood, or the roda circle of capoeira, in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, the four Brazilian New Yorkers in the group charge every note with a palpable energy.

Performances will be in two sets, at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m., in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. This performance is held in conjunction with the film exhibition Premiere Brazil 2009)
