Howard Barker's The Europeans explores the scarring left in the wake of empire building. The already decaying Austro-Hungarian Empire and Habsburg Dynasty are established in a war-weary 17th-century Vienna. The victorious and apprehensive Commander Starhemberg (a real historic figure) becomes entangled with teenaged Katrina, whose abuse at the hand of the Turks is similar to that of Titus Andronicus' Lavinia. Katrina's relentless desire to undergo public humiliation to expose her plight puts into practice Barker's "Theatre of Catastrophe," where individual and social upheaval creates moral alternatives rather than absolute answers for audience and playwright alike.
