Israeli cult sensations the Puppet Folk Revival close out their month-long residency tonight at City Winery. Haggard lead-puppet Red and his band sing classics such as Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door," along with inventively folksy takes on modern hits, breathing new life into Rihanna's massively overplayed "Umbrella" and infusing M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" with a delightfully unexpected whimsy. Other highlights include Red's mousy drug dealer, Philip, who joins him on stage for a spirited rendition of Paul Simon's ultimate road-trip song, "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard." It all goes smashingly well with a glass or two of the Winery's full-bodied Syrah.
