Maly Drama Theatre
The St. Petersburg-based Maly Drama Theatre returns to the Festival with director Lev Dodin's powerful stage adaptation of Russion author Vasily Grossman's novel Life and Fate, considered so dangerous in 1960 that is was banned and only published posthumously 20 years later. In bringing to life early 1940s Russia, Grossman tells a seemingly familiar story from a fresh viewpoint. Dodin's production focuses on a mother facing death in a Jewish ghetto in Ukraine, and her physicist son who, on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon, confronts an impossible moral dilemma. War serves as a frenzied backdrop for the bird's eye view of social struggle reflected in the friends, extended family, colleagues, and acquaintances of a single family.
