Perhaps Atmosphere captured their situation best with the lines, "Never got rich and famous / Don't get me wrong / There are a lot of different faces / That listen to the songs." With relaxed beats and confessional rhymes largely free of mainstream rap's braggadocio and violence, emcee Slug and DJ/producer Ant have occupied a unique niche in the music world since their 1997 debut. Since then, Atmosphere played a huge role in developing that niche into the indie hip-hop genre. Some would call their particular strain "emo-hop" — we won't go there, but we will check them out at Webster tonight.
