Like many other movies, Paper Heart is about true love, why it occurs, and if it exists at all. Unlike its peers, the Sundance darling takes a format as contradictory as its subject. The film is both a documentary and a fictional romantic comedy, frequently blurring the line between the two. Charlyne Yi (who we interviewed on Flavorwire) stars as herself, suffering from a lack of faith in the possibility of love. Searching for answers, Yi interviews people across the country about their own experiences with romance. These interviews form the documentary portion, which are accompanied by creative puppet reenactments of the interviewees' experiences. Coupled with this is the fictional romance between Yi and Michael Cera, whose blooming love is threatened by the ever-expanding documentary.
