Almost three decades and 16 albums into their career, Sonic Youth have established a reputation of cool, virtually unmatched by any other active band in the indie world. Beginning as art-damaged noise rockers in the early '80s, they have gone on to embrace both the avant-garde and the mainstream, with 20th-century composers exerting just as much influence over their aesthetic as pop icons like Madonna. Their most recent album, The Eternal, continues their late-career hitting streak with another collection of solid-to-great tunes that run the gamut from Ramones-style two-minute blasts of punk to mellowed, ballad-like compositions punctuated by abrasive dirges, all of which will be welcome setlist additions to their towering live performances.
