There's not a whole lot you can do in the New York theatre world for $20, but with the 2009 Summer Play Festival, that budget can actually be stretched over two nights. Since SPF's inception in 2004, the fest has provided exposure to up-and-coming writers and directors, while encouraging audiences with excellent plays and musicals. The creative teams are always strong (one play this year even includes Ally Sheedy), and many shows sell out. Watch for tickets to Ken Urban's The Happy Sad to slip away before you can even say "SPF."
