Choreography Shen Wei
Sponsored by Mitsui & Co. (U.S.A.), Inc.
Festival favorite Shen Wei’s choreographic journey continues in the dramatically transformed Alice Tully Hall as he and his stellar ensemble perform the New York premiere of Re- (I, II, III), an investigation of divergent societies that puts on display the choreographer’s inimitable East-meets-West dance vocabulary.
Shen Wei’s startling three-part work includes an updated version of his captivating Re- I (Tibet), the equally compelling Re- II (Angkor Wat), and Re- III (New Silk Road), a piece that reflects his journey to China and back.
Re- I (Tibet), the stunning first part of this dance trilogy, explores its geographic namesake and incorporates recorded chant by Tibetan nun Ani Choying Dolma and a mandala made from shreds of colored paper that is deconstructed as dancers move through its design. Re- II (Angkor Wat) takes as its inspiration the sounds and architecture of the ancient Cambodian temple complex. And Re- III (New Silk Road), inspired in part by Shen Wei’s experience choreographing the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, and incorporating a score by comtemporary composer David Lang, addresses the societal role of the individual in Chinese and in Western life.
This performance is approximately two hours and ten minutes with two intermissions. Please note: There is no late seating.
Part III: New Silk Road commissioned by Lincoln Center Festival 2009
