Saxophonist JD Allen plays short, three-to-four minute songs that bring back an economy that's often lacking in contemporary instrumental jazz. The result is an exhilarating, toe-tapping experience that's ideally suited for the the Vanguard's cozy basement space. Allen's compositions fuse sweet bebop melodies with a rough-around-the-edges avant-garde flair, alternately evoking John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman in a way that never feels derivative. Drummer Rudy Royston and bassist Gregg August round out the trio, holding down the fort with tight beats freeing Allen to get his groove on in new and exciting ways.
