Jesca Hoop ’s childhood was highly musical, singing folk song harmonies with four siblings. As her clear soprano voice and gift for inventive songcraft will attest, Jesca has music in her veins. Pursuing a path away from her strict Mormon upbringing, Jesca traveled and became involved with fields of work such as wilderness rehabilitation programs, construction, farming and finally, working for five years as nanny to the children of Tom Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan.
Hoop had already been writing songs, and Waits and Brennan took interest. A version of the ravishing "Seed of Wonder" was passed to publisher Lionel Conway, who gave it to Nic Harcourt, the musically adventurous host of KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. It reached Top 5 for 8 weeks and holds KCRW’s record for most requested track. Record company interest ensued, and a highly acclaimed album, Kismet, was recorded in 2007. Last fall, Jesca’s true self was revealed on her Kismet Acoustic EP. Championed by Elbow's Guy Garvey, he invited Jesca to support the Mercury Prize winning band on their UK / Europe tour, and lent his inimitable vocals to the song, "Murder of Birds".
Jesca is currently finishing her 2nd record to be released later in the year.
