Frederick Douglass Academy’s Harlem Samba
Thursday Aug 20, 2009 (7pm)
The young drummers of Frederick Douglass Academy’s Harlem Samba, under the direction of Dana Monteiro, bring the sounds of Rio’s exuberant carnival baterias to the streets of New York. 7:30pm Damrosch Park Bandshell Buika Urban Bush Women: Give Your Hands to Struggle and Shelter Rising Afro-Spanish star Buika’s rich, romantic rasp hints at her West African lineage while it mainlines flamenco’s Gyspy soul, as she sings against emotional dictatorships, telling tales of turbulent affairs of the heart. Urban Bush Women celebrate 25 years of weaving contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora, bringing the untold and under-told histories and stories of disenfranchised people to light.
