With Corinne Marchand, Antoine Bourseiller. Unfolding in real time, but with a jazzy, expressionistic style that echoes its heroine’s inner journey, Agnes Varda’s 1962 film about a famous model whose health crisis (and a fateful tarot card reading) cause her to reevaluate her life as she wanders through Paris, is one of the under-appreciated masterworks of the French New Wave. Varda called it “a portrait of a woman painted onto a documentary about Paris.” In its dissection of celebrity culture and superficiality, the movie is especially timely today.
This series marks the first collaboration between the
David Schwartz, chief curator of Museum of the Moving Image.
