On the concrete playgrounds where we grew up, he who could walk the dog and go around the world was king. But if you thought those kids were hard, the contestants of YoYoNation's Yo-Yo Open are OGs. Today, Yo-YoNation descends (and ascends, and descends again) on South Street Seaport for the third-annual International Yo-Yo Open & New York State Yo-Yo Contest. The sport has come a long way from the school yard: modern yo-yos utilize magnesium composite metals, surgical-grade stainless-steel bearings and high-resin plastics, and the tricks they're used for bear names like Reverse Suicide and Split the Atom. It's the ultimate in nerd cool, but make no mistake — if you enter the ring, there ain't no half steppin'.
