(Le) Poisson Rouge says…

Radio Happy Hour, a live variety show featuring an old-time radio comedy/mystery and guest stars is following up their hilarious summer series, which has featured Norah Jones and Michael Showalter previously, with an August 8th performance featuring Andrew W.K. at (Le) Poisson Rouge in the historic Greenwich Village.

At the center of the show is a short, old time radio mystery/drama/comedy. In a sad and somewhat prescient turn of events, this month's radio play was written as an homage to The Breakfast Club and its archetypal characters, with special guest Andrew W.K. playing a John Bender-type character. We think the resemblance is uncanny.

In addition to WK's turn as John Bender in this month's radio-play, host Sam Osterhout will portray geek Brian Johnson (a la Anthony Michael Hall), actor Geoff Herbach shows up as Andrew Clark (see Emilio Estevez), actress Robin Reed represents the ladies as Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald) as well as Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy). And in a sequel-like introduction of a new character actor and sound effect master Matt Skibiak appears as...Tim Gunn, style icon.

Radio Happy Hour is saddened by the loss of one modern film and television's greatest creative minds - to wit, one of its biggest influences - and we can't think of a better way to pay tribute than by making The Breakfast Club anew, Radio Happy Hour-style.

About Radio Happy Hour

Each month Radio Happy Hour engages a guest star in a wildly right-angled conversation that careens between interviews, performances, and an audience quiz show. At the center of the show is a short, old time radio mystery/drama/comedy in which the guest performs as him or herself or, in some cases, as Nancy Drew. The hour-long performances are on the second Saturdays of August, October, November and December at 2 p.m.

Radio Happy Hour is a creation of the show’s host, Sam Osterhout, co-founder of the Electric Arc Radio Show (EARS), a wildly popular Minneapolis-based radio sitcom. "Radio Happy Hour is like Hee-Haw, but more New York-y. That is to say, it’s fully aware of its own brilliance. Plus, there will be specials on tater tots," said Osterhout, who, along with his EARS co-founder, novelist Geoff Herbach (The Miracle Letter of T. Rimberg, Crown/Three Rivers Press), co-write Radio Happy Hour. The show also stars actors Matt Skibiak and Robin Reed, and features music by Stephanie Davilla (aka StarDweller).

Every performance is a completely new mystery and a new guest. The event takes place on the second Saturday of every month (except September) at (Le) Poisson Rouge where the audience will partake in happy hour libations and brunch with a possible side of tater tots. The show begins at 2 pm. Doors open at 1 pm. Single show tickets are $5 in advance, $8 at the door.

The show is podcast online following each performance. You can hear the entire June installment of Radio Happy Hour, with Michael Showalter, here. You can find pictures from the first two performances at the Radio Happy Hour website.
