Most people have probably heard Liquid Liquid without even knowing it: the wobbly, dubby bass-line on their signature song "Cavern" was the basis for Melle Mel's classic rap anthem "White Lines." Like all great bands, Liquid Liquid's minimalist, instrument-centric funk records may have not made much of a splash when initially released on the influential New York imprint 99 Records, but over time their impact has been felt, their music paving the way for post-rockers like Tortoise. Tonight, in part of the Wordless Music Series' continued efforts to break down the artificial barriers between "high" and "low" art, Liquid Liquid is joined by minimalist composer Rhys Chatham, who premieres his new work, "A Crimson Grail for 200 Guitars." And yes, 200 guitarists perform the piece live. Maybe he's not so minimalist, after all?

Lincoln Center says…

For club-music mavens, the return of New York’s seminal breakbeat artistes Liquid Liquid is a reminder that in the beginning freestyle dancers romped and stomped to the rhythms of percussionists. Two hundred electric guitars and basses line the park and plug in for the world premiere of Rhys Chatham’s A Crimson Grail for 200 Electric Guitars.
