One glance at the schedule for the second-annual 1st Irish theatre festival makes clear that the dramatic voices of today's Ireland carry well beyond weirs and watering holes. The five-week program spanning 12 venues across the city features contemporary playwrights lending their considerable wits to chart a new Irish landscape, changed utterly by its unprecedented global context, economic pendulum swings, and ever-shifting urban fallout. In The Pride of Parnell Street, Sebastian Barry ennobles Dublin's inner city; in Walking the Road, playwright/novelist Dermot Bolger takes a journey through Irish repatriation. Altogether, the 26 festival events demonstrate that circumstances may change, but Irish craft remains as sharp as ever.
