The phrase "Hanging Fire" is the translation of an idiom referring to a delayed decision or judgment. This show asks viewers to delay their immediate assumptions about Pakistan and its art, and consider what the pieces convey, beyond a quick impression. The exhibit features work by Zahoor ul Akhlaq, whose legacy to Pakistani modernism remains strong. Imran Qureshi, whose art is influenced by the Mughal illuminated manuscripts, also has a piece on display created specifically for the Asia Society. With 15 artists to ponder and an accompanying 160-page publication, Hanging Fire gives us a sample of the multitude of talent available from Pakistan's contemporary art scene.

Asia Society and Museum says…

The first US museum exhibition to focus on contemporary art from Pakistan, Hanging Fire is called a "milestone" by Time Out New York and the New York Times hails it as "a highly anticipated event".  Representing the current energy, vitality, and range of expression in Pakistan’s little-known yet thriving arts scene, the exhibition comprises nearly 50 works by 15 artists, and includes installation art, video, photography, painting, and sculpture.  Curated by Salima Hashmi, acclaimed scholar and artist, the exhibition presents a comprehensive look at recent and current trends in Pakistani art.
