Emily Dickinson was an innovative and independent writer who protected her craft. In Chris Cragen's Emily: An Amethyst Remembrance, her poetry is used as dialogue for Emily (Elizabeth A. Davis) and the other cast members who double as friends and family. Emily turns back the dial from 1860 to 1848 in order to trace the events (deaths, a dysfunctional family, pressure to publish) that caused her to withdraw from the outside world. While those around her loudly and coarsely voice their frustrations, Emily calmly records the most complete inner life in American letters. Her motivation is forever unknown, the results undeniable.
