Once a month, the New Amsterdam Market strives to become — like Les Halles, that olden market district in Paris — the "stomach" of our city by taking over South Street for mercantile pursuits: butchers, grocers, farmers, bakers, and other mongers arrive ready to entice the retail (or wholesale) customer with the freshest, most sustainable merchandise out there. A modernization of the traditional market hall as seen in period epics, the market opens up its four-session season on the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's fated voyage to these coasts.
