Just shy of the big eight-zero, saxophonist Ornette Coleman is one of the only surviving jazz giants.  He practically invented "free jazz," a no-holds-barred improvisational expression that plays off the communication among musicians, and paved the way for avant-garde legend John Zorn and even the noise experimentation of Throbbing Gristle and all the shoegazers that followed. While he knows the power of dissonance better than anyone, Ornette is also amazingly adept at sliding in a well-constructed melody. Tonight, he plays a rare live show at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater.
